A key aspect of our central beliefs is that sustainability and caring for our environment is a fundamental part of education which is embedded in the lives of children at Timber Tots. As such, we have been focusing on our commitment to becoming more sustainable each year by finding small changes that we can implement to make larger impacts and how our actions today will affect our children’s lives in the future.

Most recently, Timber Tots has become a member of Ocean Crusaders, participating in their Caps Crusade Club. Ocean Crusaders are working on ensuring plastic caps don’t end up in the environment – as caps left on a recycled product cannot be recycled in the same way and therefore end up in landfill. Instead, with Cap Crusade Club, they are recycled to create a new product – building bricks. These bricks will be used in the Gumnuts/Sustainability area as part of the loose parts play.

For those families who wish to participate and help our cause, we have set up a new black bin in the basement for all families to place their clean plastics bottle caps in. All plastic lids including pop tops need to be washed and dried before placing into the bin to prevent mould growth and contamination. These caps will be collected for the children to sort into different colours, before we send them off to Ocean Crusaders to be turned into large lego building bricks. For every 10kgs of lids we collect we will receive one brick. So far with the help of Containers For Change – Coorparoo and The Jungle Adventure Play the children have already been cleaning and sorting lids with the hope to start receiving bricks to build with.

We look forward to working collaboratively with our families and local community to support this initiative and continuing to embed small sustainable changes, which will be largely beneficial on our environment for future generations.
